Travel Guide
Welcome to Málaga, a vibrant coastal city where rich history, Mediterranean charm, and modern culture come together.
As you prepare for the upcoming congress, we invite you to take some time to discover the captivating sights, beautiful streets, and unique atmosphere that make Málaga a wonderful destination to explore. From historic landmarks and fascinating museums to sunny beaches and lively plazas, this guide highlights some of the city's most iconic attractions for you to enjoy during your free time.
1. Málaga Cathedral
The beautiful Málaga Cathedral is a must-see during your stay. It is particularly notable for being unfinished: when viewed from the front, you will notice that one tower is missing. It was omitted during construction in the 18th century due to a lack of funds. The cathedral's interior is equally fascinating and well worth exploring.
Practical Information
- Please note that the walk from the hotel to the Cathedral will take approximately 15–20 minutes.
- At the entrance, you can choose whether you would like to take an audio-guided tour, including the entrance fee of 10 EUR, or add the Virtual Reality experience for an additional 5 EUR.
- Please note that this visit is on a self-paying basis. Please bring your credit card or cash to cover the entrance fee.
- The visit will take approximately 60–90 minutes.
- After your visit, there are countless options for a coffee break or refreshing drink in the streets of Málaga's Old Town. Alternatively, you can return to the hotel and relax.
2. Picasso Museum
Did you know that Picasso was born in Málaga? It is therefore no surprise that an entire museum has been dedicated to him in the city.
The museum houses Picasso's works spanning more than 80 years, from his early years through to some of his final works. Even if you are not particularly interested in art, Picasso is certainly worth discovering. His paintings are fascinating and often unconventional, making the museum an interesting experience even for those who are not familiar with art.
After your museum visit, you can continue your Picasso experience independently with a visit to Picasso's birthplace, which is only 5 minutes away.
Practical Information
- Please note that the walk from the hotel to the Picasso Museum will take approximately 15 minutes.
- This visit is on a self-paying basis. The entrance fee is 13 EUR, and you can book your ticket online in advance.
- The audio-guided tour will take approximately 1.5–2 hours.
- After your tour, you can also visit Picasso's birthplace, Museo Casa Natal de Picasso, a rather small but also very interesting museum.
Museo Casa Natal de Picasso
- Opening hours: 09.30–20.00
- Homepage: Picasso Natal
- Entrance fee: 3 EUR
- Duration (audio-guided tour): approximately 45 minutes

3. Alcazaba Fortress & Castillo de Gibralfaro
The Alcazaba is one of the most popular highlights in Andalusia. This medieval fortress dates back to the Arab occupation. Its typical Arab horseshoe arches and stone lattice windows are reminiscent of buildings in Morocco, while the well-tended gardens of the castle complex offer beautiful views of the city and the sea.
The paved path up the hill to Castillo de Gibralfaro offers stunning views of the sea along the way. At the top, you will reach what is described as the best viewpoint in Málaga, with views across the entire city, the surrounding mountains, and the harbor with its ships.
At the Castillo itself, you can climb the castle walls and walk around the site. In the former powder tower, there is also a permanent exhibition of weapons and armor from the Middle Ages.
Practical Information
- Please note that the walk from the hotel to the Alcazaba will take approximately 25–30 minutes.
- More importantly, the path up to Castillo de Gibralfaro is quite steep and will require 20–30 minutes of uphill walking. The visit to the Alcazaba will also require quite a few steps uphill.
- You do not need to be an Olympic athlete to take part in this visit; however, some physical fitness and proper walking shoes are required.
- At the entrance, you can choose whether you would like to see both monuments (10 EUR entrance fee) or only one of them (7 EUR entrance fee).
- Please note that this visit is on a self-paying basis. Please bring your credit card or cash to cover the entrance fee.
- After your visit (Alcazaba: approximately 90 minutes; Castillo de Gibralfaro: approximately 45 minutes; walk between the two monuments: approximately 30 minutes), you will arrive on foot at the bottom of the hill, in the middle of Málaga's Old Town, where you will find countless options for a coffee break or refreshing drink. Alternatively, you can return to the hotel and relax.
- Directions (walk 25–30 min): Hotel NH Málaga to Alcazaba de Málaga, Centro, Málaga - Google Maps
- If you would like to visit Castillo de Gibralfaro first or only, you can use the following directions (approximately 30 minutes): Alcazaba de Málaga, Centro, Málaga to Castillo de Gibralfaro - Google Maps
4. Roman Theatre & Old Town Coffee Break
Long before the Moors, the Romans had already discovered the appeal of the Costa del Sol and settled here.
The Roman Theatre in Málaga was built in the 1st century AD and was used for various events. Following the fall of the Roman Empire and the arrival of the Moors in Andalusia, the theatre fell into disrepair. Eventually, the Moors used parts of it in the construction of the Alcazaba above it.
The theatre was not rediscovered and excavated until 1951. Today, you can still see the spectator stands and parts of the stage.
Practical Information
- Please note that the walk from the hotel to the Roman Theatre will take approximately 20 minutes.
- The walk will take approximately 20 minutes, depending on how many pictures you would like to take during the tour. 😉
- No entrance fee 😊
- After your visit, you will find yourself in the middle of Málaga's Old Town, with countless options for a coffee break or refreshing drink.
- Directions (walk ca 20 min): Hotel NH Málaga to Málaga Roman Theatre - Google Maps
5. Muelle Uno Walk & Drinks with Seaview
Centre Pompidou Option
Muelle Uno is the newly constructed harbor promenade in Málaga, completed in 2011. It features many charming boutiques, restaurants, and cultural institutions.
The Centre Pompidou, with its many works by artists including Miró, Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and others, is also located here.
Muelle Uno connects the Old Town with the city beach and is ideal for a leisurely stroll between boutiques and yachts. At the very end of the promenade, where the beach begins, stands Málaga's lighthouse, La Farola.
Practical Information
- Please note that the walk from the hotel to Muelle Uno will take approximately 20 minutes.
- No fees for the tour 😊 (excluding Centre Pompidou).
- At Muelle Uno, you are free to choose your activities: visit the Centre Pompidou, go shopping, or find the best seaview cocktail in Málaga.
